Liberal is believing it's right to make other people pay their hard earned money to show compassion and mercy. Showing (or desiring to show) mercy and compassion to people yourself is being Christlike, especially when you are using HIS resources and HE is the one getting all the praise and appreciation (if there is any shown at all). Conservative is knowing where it all comes from to begin with... :-)

Isn't that one of the blessed treasures of the Gospel-the inability to put it in a box or place parameters on it! It kind of turns our old way of thinking on it's head. Praise God for His work in your son's life, how wonderful! : )

Great point. I tried to explain that the process of allowing children to go into culture is a long one. Innocence, purity, instruction, laying foundations comes over years of living in the haven of a Christian home. When a child begins to mature, a parent will begin to see questions, changes. Then, a child will begin to be exposed to culture just because he is alive in our culture. As they have learned to trust us, they will still listen to our wisdom and we can be the ones who inform and help shape their convictions. And little by little, they become equipped to face a very difficult world. I do not think children should be exposed too early, until they have moral and spiritual strength of their own. But at some point, we must help them to own their convictions and wisdom on their own, so they will be prepared for the battle.

Great speech. The only point to add is that it takes a level of maturity to be able to engage in certain things in our culture without being swayed by them. So for some, avoidance is wise. Those with a weaker conscience in this area need support in what is, for now, the right thing for them. For the rest, getting to know what people are in to so that we can better share Christ with them...that is certainly better. :-) I look forward to challenging my children along these lines when they are much older! It's a little early yet to start with a newborn and a two year old! Haha!

When I was Nathan's age, I was growing more liberal too. I saw so much pain, and I wanted to make it all better, passionately. As I turn 30 this year, I feel myself growing more conservative too. Some things are mattering to me more than they used to- family and the old ideals, like Nathan said. The important thing to remember is Jesus isn't political. He just IS. Pure goodness. The closer we grow to him, the less those labels mean, because we belong to him.
