Early this morning, I sat on my front porch and took in the Colorado breeze, the sparkling aspens “shimmering”, the geraniums, roses, and quiet–the cherished quiet.
I read from
Celtic Daily prayer–3 scriptures—Psalm, Old Testament and New Testament
My Bible–New American Standard, my beloved version
Daily Light Readings for morning and evenings
Wendall Berry’s Life is a Miracle
Drinking Yorkshire Gold Tea, munching homemade toast with blackberry jam, and nibbling strawberries, blue berries, raspberries and nuts
Baking 5 more loaves of bread, after baking 6 yesterday–butter tops bubbling!
Preparing for a speaking trip to New Brunswick, leaving early tomorrow morning. (How I love my Canadian friends, and I love sharing memories and time together. I am looking so forward to this trip.)
Buying groceries and baking and freezing food for the 11 of us who will be sequestered in our home for a week for the national speech and debate finals. That’s what all the bread is about! I get home Sunday morning and they all come Sunday afternoon. I am looking so forward to this tournament. Speech tournaments are so exciting and so much fun, running around, seeing all the finalists, living in the familiar relationships with friends. Alex, a childhood friend and debater will give us lots of fun as he stays with us and judges lots of rounds. Methinks midnight will be the standard for going to sleep each night, even though all will need to be at the tourney by 8!
Joel, Sarah, Clay and I will be judges and cheerleaders.
Taking my car in for a fix on a tire puncture.
washing clothes and dishes, one more time,
Finishing the financial package for college with Joy this morning.
Getting excited for Nathan coming home in June, and making arrangements for a flight.
Checking into my flight and thinking of the fun talks I will have with my sweet friend Kristen on the 3 hour drive Friday to the hotel.
Trying to finagle a tea time with Joy before I go tomorrow and gathering the others for a quick deck dinner tonight.
So far, I am enjoying my day and thankful for the fulness God has given me. This is a season where He is opening my eyes, once again, to His faithfulness and my heart continues to restore and renew. A season of spring, for sure.
So what are you doing today?

lovely post. I love your blog. I am currently reading mostly from ESV but I have heard NAS is really really good as well…. I was raised with KJV so I revert back to that quite often too.
Oh, praying a blessed and productive day for you, and a great trip to Canada! Thank you for your example and for continuing to plant seeds of parent discipleship, walking with God, creating a rich legacy, and loving your family and others well. So much fruit is all over the world from your willingness to speak, write books, host Bible studies and disciples moms, be hospitable, hold conferences, and write this blog!
Praying for His strength, His joy, and His words spoken through you as you go about today and the days ahead. Love you.
At the moment, wishing I lived closeby so I could be part of all your fun and busy-ness!
Bless you, dear friend. So grateful for you! Today we’re finishing some math lessons, playing with 3 week old kittens, and trying out some new watercolor paints. Love you!
We are looking forward to using some new watercolors soon too, Misty!
Sounds lovely and that bread looks amazing! Would you please share your bread recipe!?
We ate homemade PB granola over plain yogurt for breakfast, I hung out two loads of bedding wash on my line (! I love clotheslines!
), I laid on the trampoline with my two little kids w/kittens, tried to ride my oldest daughter’s bike (way too small for me!
), read a bit of these books each: God’s Smuggler, Calico Bush, Yankee Thunder, and also Magic School Bus: Inside the Human Body. The two little kids fell asleep on the couch snuggled under blankets, the oldest is showering, baby sleeping, second oldest is resting in his room. Third load of laundry washing…we are just snacking on fruit, crackers, cheese, & meat slices for lunch…it’s a cool, overcast day, but one of those nice ones where you can just be cozy…after quiet time, we have some learning to do!
I suppose I should clean the kitchen soon too!
I enjoyed my morning quiet time also today…reading a bit in 2 Samuel, Psalms, and Romans. I also read a bit from Candles in the Dark and Gold Cord by Amy Carmichael. Your breakfast looks delicious and so does your bread. I need to make up a big batch myself SOON!!
Thanks for sharing, Sally! Hope you have a great trip and visit with your friends visiting!
I always picture you living in a fairy tale land full of hot tea, good books, flowers, and scones (or something equally delicious). I’m not too far off!
Took the kids to the zoo this morning with a good friend and her kids. We tried, fairly successfully, to avoid the myriad of school children on field trips.
Came home and did some cleaning while the kids played. Then we all had a sweet iced tea/cookie party. Doing some online stuff now and will get off soon to get breakfast for dinner started.
Ha – I’ve been reading your homeschooling book (Seasons of a Mother’s Heart)! It is such a blessing to me! Also planting vegetables in the garden and weeding/rotating children’s clothes. Found out mice were in the summer clothes storage! Ack! Mouse traps, laundry and gagging just got added to the schedule. After the gagging, I figured I would take a break here for a minute.
Back to work!
Blessings,
Rhonda
Planning curriculum for next year, or at least a list of things to check out at a homeschooling conference Saturday. Trying to find time here and there to read your new edition of Educating the Whole Hearted Child that has been on my nightstand for a week or so! Driving kids to piano, violin, ballet and karate. Looking forward to next fall when each child drops at least one activity. Making strawberry rhubarb crisp. Wishing I had a little table between our porch rockers like yours. Looking forward to getting an aching gall bladder removed next week. Supporting other bloggers by taking time to leave comments! Thank you for your inspiring blog! May God continue to bless your ministry.
Hard to read this post, though it sounds lovely, my comparison sickness raises its ugly head and says, “I am no way like this woman and could never be so why do I even get her posts”. Were you meaning to be sarcastic with your question “what are you doing with your day?” Sorry to play the devils advocate but my dang, my life looks more like, spilled coffee on an already messy kitchen table, while the dog barks and the phone rings and I still can’t find my kids shoes….
….quiet time? ummm maybe last month sometime…Lord help me!
Thank you for the reminder to look up, and to take hold of the life God has given. I’m facing some tough circumstances right now, but I can dry the tears and carry on because God’s Spirit is with me and I do not have to fear. Funny how a post about your day spoke all of this into my heart. You just never know what God will do with your words!
Bless you, Sally!
I can’t wait too!!!
And thank you for letting us see the realness of you — what a wonderful reminder of the load you juggle and the sacrifice you make for so many.
So thankful for you, Sally.
Kristen
I am sitting here at the computer while my coffee brews. I babysit most mornings, but this morning it is just the children and me after Daddy leaves to work. There is more for us to do than we will be able to get done. I decided the inside stuff will have to wait as the days are delightful outside this week. So my children will enjoy playing outside while I finish getting the overgrown weed situation under control in the garden and getting the rest of my planting done even though it is a little bit late, but not too late thankfully. Then going to get the rest of my husbands billings ready for the mail. Then tidy up the house for the extra 2 boys that will be here tomorrow. After that I will go for my walk and pray for my family, our business, our church, and over the homes in this town. Then my husband and I will read together in our current book. Then I will collapse in bed. At some point today we will squeeze in a short trip to the pool as my sons absolutely love it and we make use of that pool pass. As for my devotional time I am studying the Proverbs 31 woman. I have been looking at this in three different versions. The NIV, KJV, and the RSV. I reading this post the day after you posted it. So I hope you enjoyed your really busy day yesterday. I almost forgot some of the most joyful parts of my day today. Two little celebrations one year ago today my niece Peyton was born and one year ago today I worked my last day in my career outside the home becoming a SAHM mom (something I have wanted since my children were born). It is a great exciting day!!!
Today I am: Administering the Stanford Achievement Test to a 7th grade boy who is sweet and shy; mentoring a mom while my daughter gives her two boys piano lessons; helping my 2 sons (17 & 18) finish their scholarship applications and then driving them over to Red Rocks Community College to drop off their applications; picking up ice for a big water jug that will be used later when my 4 children play Ultimate Frisbee in our neighborhood with about 30 friends; loading up our car with camping chairs, water jugs, Frisbee and my 4 precious children to go play ultimate in our neighborhood; after Frisbee we are all going out to Chipotle, then Yougurland; lastly, I am waiting up until 10:30pm or so until my wonderful husband comes home from a business trip. Full day~abundant life. Thank you Jesus!
Oh Sally! I also do my devotions from the Celtic Daily Prayer book! There have been times that you write something that reminds me of something I had read in it, and it’s so exciting to see the reason it sounds so familiar. Have a blessed busy day!
Wow that bread looks good! can you share the recipe
I hope you have a very fun weekend and manage to get everything on that list done!
I am visiting family in England at the moment, and so my day was full of tea and scones and enjoying the rain, and ended with my Dad getting to tell my children the same bedtime stories he told me as a child, a very precious moment – as they only get to see Grandad every 2 years.
Oh, sweet Sally, I’m continuing the dance with Jesus in the midst of dealing with Multiple Sclerosis. My wiggle and shake is still alive but my body isn’t moving quite like it use to.
I was blessed by a sweet sister in the Lord as she took my son and I to the hospital to remove his PH probe that was placed yesterday. We then celebrated by eating yummy Southwest Chicken sandwiches and frozen yogurt. The remainder of the day I will relish the hand of God’s provision for our family as we eat a yummy Asian Chicken Salad that other members of God’s family delivered to us last night.
Today, I celebrate life with Jesus and His amazing love for me!
